Burlington Fence Installation

Burlington is the largest city in Alamance County and it wears its history openly. The textile industry built the place, and the mill villages that grew up around the plants are still recognizable neighborhoods with their own street patterns and lot sizes. Around that older core the city has kept expanding, particularly to the south toward Lake Mackintosh and the newer commercial corridor. The result is a fencing market with two distinct halves.

The older neighborhoods

Mill-village lots are narrow, deep, and close together. Houses sit near the street, back yards are modest by current standards, and outbuildings that went up decades ago sit exactly where a modern fence line would like to run. The practical answer is usually to enclose a defined back yard rather than the whole parcel, and to pick a style that suits the age of the housing. Board-on-board and shadow-box wood look the same from both sides, which matters a great deal when your neighbor’s window is fifteen feet from your fence. Access is the other constraint on these streets. Some of these lots have no way to get a machine into the back, so the digging happens by hand. That is normal work for our crews, not an exception, but we check it at the estimate so nothing surprises anybody.

The newer south side

Out toward Lake Mackintosh and the newer developments the conversation changes to covenants, matching the street, and low maintenance. Vinyl with PrivacyLock panels is the workhorse there. It gives a solid, uniform privacy line, it never needs staining, and there is no board sitting wet against the ground. On lots facing water or open common area, ornamental aluminum finished with SolarShield is generally the better call, since it defines the yard without giving up the reason you bought the lot.

Piedmont clay under all of it

Alamance County sits on the same heavy red clay as the rest of the Piedmont. It holds water rather than draining it, and water that freezes against a post expands and lifts it. That is the mechanism behind nearly every leaning fence you drive past, and it is why we set every post in concrete at a depth suited to the fence height rather than tamping soil around it. Humid summers work on any wood finish, thunderstorms push against solid panels like sails, tropical remnants reach this far inland every few years, and midwinter ice loads a top rail with weight nothing in the design assumed. The part you cannot see is the part that decides how the fence looks a decade out.
