Two ages of housing, two kinds of fence

On the older streets the lots are narrow and long, side yards are tight, and there are detached garages and outbuildings that any fence line has to work around. Access is the practical constraint, and a fair amount of the digging on those jobs is done by hand. Style matters more here than it does in a new subdivision. Working with older ground

Fence work on an old lot occasionally turns up what previous owners left behind. Buried footings from a fence that came out decades ago, old concrete, and utility runs that predate current marking practices all show up. We locate utilities before digging and we deal with old footings rather than trying to work around them, because a post set alongside buried concrete never sits properly.

Underneath is Piedmont red clay that holds water instead of shedding it. In midwinter that water freezes, expands, and pushes shallow posts upward, and a few cycles of that is what puts a lean into an old fence line. Every post we set goes into concrete at proper depth. Between humid summers, thunderstorms driving against a solid panel, and the ice storms that come through every few winters, the footings do most of the work.
