Stokesdale sits at the north end of Guilford County where NC 68 and NC 158 cross, and it is in the middle of a transition. Drive out any of the secondary roads and you are quickly into farmland, woods, and parcels measured in acres. Drive the main corridor and you pass newer subdivisions that were not there long ago. Both versions of Stokesdale call us, and they want different things.

Two kinds of fence work in one town

On the acreage side the questions are practical. Where does the boundary actually run. How do we get equipment through. Will the line hold a horse or a couple of cows. Where does the low ground sit that holds water after a storm. Farm fencing answers most of that, and the whole job usually comes down to how well the corner and gate posts are set, because those are what the rest of the line pulls against.

In the newer sections the questions look more like the ones we get in any subdivision. What height is approved, which way does the finished side face, and can we match what the neighbors already put up. Vinyl with PrivacyLock panels is the common answer, since it gives a solid line with no staining and no rot where the boards meet the ground. Wood still holds its own where somebody wants the look of stained pickets, and board-on-board builds sidestep the finished-side question by looking the same from both directions.

Red clay, wet ground, and post depth

Northern Guilford clay is heavy and it holds water rather than passing it through. Every low spot on a rural parcel is a place where a post is going to sit wet for weeks at a time. When that water freezes it expands and lifts, and repeated cycles are what tilt a fence line over a few winters. The fix is not complicated but it is not optional. Posts go into concrete, set below the frost line, deeper at corners and gates than on the line. Summer brings humid heat and hard thunderstorms, the remnants of tropical systems reach this far inland every few years, and January ice loads a top rail with weight that no picket layout compensates for. The footings carry all of it.
