Graham sits close to the Haw, and the low ground running toward the river holds water the way all Piedmont clay does. Clay does not drain. It stores water against whatever is buried in it, and when that water freezes in January it expands and pushes a shallow post upward. Repeat it over several winters and a straight fence is no longer straight. Every post we set goes into concrete below the frost line, deeper in the soft spots and heavier at corners and gates.
