Eden Fence Questions

Our house is on one of the old mill streets. Are those lots harder to fence?

They are different rather than harder. The lots were platted narrow, the yards are frequently out of square with the street, and there is often an existing fence line that has drifted off the recorded boundary over the decades. We shoot the line from your pins, not from the neighbor's fence, and if the two disagree we will show you before we build rather than after.

We are close to the Dan River. Does that change anything?

It can. Ground near the Dan and the Smith holds water and some of it floods, and a fence built across a floodway will catch debris in high water. We will look at where your low ground actually is, recommend keeping the line back off the bank where that makes sense, and set the posts accordingly. It is a conversation worth having on site rather than over the phone.

Is chain link still worth installing, or should we go straight to wood?

Chain link earns its place. For a dog run, a garden, a side yard or an equipment area it is the most cost-effective enclosure there is, and black vinyl-coated mesh visually disappears against a tree line in a way galvanized does not. Where you want screening from a neighbor, wood or vinyl is the right call. Plenty of Eden properties end up with both.

What kind of upkeep does a wood fence need in this climate?

Wash it and reseal it every few years. Rockingham County summers are humid and long, which is hard on an unsealed fence, and the winter ice storms put real weight on the rails. Treated pine holds up well when it is maintained. If that schedule does not appeal to you, vinyl needs a hose and nothing else, and the HeartWood finish gives you the wood look without the brush.
