Fence Installation in Walnut Cove, NC
Walnut Cove is a small town in southern Stokes County sitting at the junction of the routes that carry most of the local traffic, with the Dan River bottoms to the north and Belews Lake off to the southeast. Fence work here splits fairly cleanly between two kinds of property, and the two do not want the same thing.
In town, it is residential and it is straightforward: privacy board behind the house, picket along a side yard, vinyl for anyone who is done with staining, and chain link for dog containment. Black vinyl-coated chain link is worth asking about, because it does the same work as galvanized without announcing itself against a treeline. On wood, StayStrong pickets are the specification that decides whether the fence still looks straight in year five.
Outside the town limits it turns agricultural fast. Field edges, pasture division, woven wire on braced corners for cattle, mesh-backed rail wherever horses are kept, and gates sized for a tractor rather than a truck. The single most common regret we hear about is a gate that was built one size too small.
The weather here is the standard Piedmont mix and the two events that matter for fencing are summer thunderstorms and winter ice. Storms load a solid fence like a sail. Ice loads the rails and every limb hanging over them. Neither one is a problem for a fence with concrete footings below the frost line, cleared overhead, and correctly spaced posts on the exposed runs. Both are a problem for one built quickly.

Walnut Cove Fence Questions
What usually fails when a summer storm comes through?
Solid panels on exposed runs, and posts that were never set properly. A privacy fence catches wind like a wall, and when a Piedmont thunderstorm comes across open ground it loads the whole run and finds the weakest footing. The fix is unglamorous: concrete footings below the frost line, tighter post spacing on exposed sections, and a vinyl system like PrivacyLock where the rails and pickets lock together instead of relying on the panel to hold itself.
We want chain link but not the industrial look. Options?
Black vinyl-coated chain link. It is the same fence functionally, it holds a dog just as well, and against a treeline or a hedge it visually disappears in a way that galvanized never does. On a property where you want containment without making a statement about it, that is usually the right call.
Our land runs down toward Belews Lake. Anything different about that?
Wind and moisture, mostly. Open water means steadier wind across a lot, which is hard on a tall solid fence and easy on an open one. Constant damp is hard on untreated wood. If you want privacy on an exposed lake-side run we will brace it properly for the load rather than pretend the exposure is not there, and if you would rather keep the view, an open rail or aluminum run does the job.
Does a gate need to be wide enough for a UTV?
If you own one, yes, and size it generously. A side gate built for a person is the one thing people regret within the first month, because everything you actually need to move through a fence, a mower, a UTV, a trailer, a load of mulch, is wider than a walk gate. Tell us what has to fit and we will build the opening for it.
