Whichever it is, the corner, brace, and gate posts get set heavier and deeper than the line posts, because a long fence fails at its anchors rather than in the middle of a run.

Long runs across ground that moves

Rural southern Alamance is undisturbed red clay, which means the natural low spots are exactly where they have always been and they still hold water for days after a storm. A post standing in saturated clay through a hard freeze gets lifted as that water expands, and after several winters a line that was shot straight is visibly not. In the soft stretches we go deeper and let the concrete cure properly before anything is hung on it.

Layout matters more here than almost anywhere else we work. Across open ground a run is visible in its entirety and the eye finds any post that is out of line immediately. We set the terminal and corner posts first, establish the line between them, and space from there rather than working off the last post. On steady grade the fence gets racked so it follows the ground with no gap underneath. On abrupt changes we step it. The weather does the rest of the testing. Humid summers, thunderstorms that push hard against anything solid, tropical remnants that reach this far inland every few years, and the January ice that coats a top rail with weight nothing in the design allowed for.
