Mayodan takes its name from the two rivers that meet just downstream, the Mayo and the Dan, and it was purpose-built as a mill town in the 1890s when Washington Mills put a plant on the water. The layout still shows the plan: compact worker housing on a tight grid, the mill site by the river, and the town rising up the hill from there. Mayo River State Park sits north of town along the same water.
Most of the fence work we do in Mayodan is on those older, smaller lots. We dig below the disturbed layer and set every post in a concrete footing. Winter ice storms are the other real load on a fence around here, and they usually arrive with limbs coming out of the hardwoods overhead. A properly footed line comes through; a tamped one leans.

Mayodan Fence Questions
The old fence in our yard has been there for decades. Do you take it out?
We can, and on most Mayodan jobs it makes sense to. Removal and haul-off is quoted as part of the job rather than left for you to deal with. What we will not do is build a new line off an old one without checking it first, because fences that have stood that long are often several feet off the recorded boundary.
We need a fenced area for dogs, not the whole yard. What is the cheapest sound option?
Chain link, in almost every case. It contains reliably, it costs less per foot than panel fence, and black vinyl-coated mesh looks far better against a tree line than galvanized does. If the run sits where you see it from the house, the coated version is worth the small difference. We size the gate so a wheelbarrow or mower gets through.
Our lot is steep behind the house. Does that add cost?
Some, because slope work takes longer and may need stepped sections rather than a straight run. It is not a reason to skip fencing. We will tell you at the estimate whether your grade calls for racked panels that follow the slope or stepped sections that stay level, and the quote reflects the actual method rather than a flat-yard price with a surprise later.
