High Point built itself around furniture, and the city still runs on that calendar. Twice a year the Market brings the industry in, showrooms open downtown, and half the neighborhoods near the center of town turn into short-term housing for a week. The rest of the year it is a working city with an unusually wide range of housing, and that range is exactly what makes fence work here interesting.

A city built in layers

The mill-era streets close in have small lots, tight setbacks, and older detached garages. Emerywood on the north side has deep lots, mature canopy, and homes where a fence has to look deliberate rather than defensive. The Montlieu and university side runs heavily toward rentals and smaller yards where a straightforward wood privacy fence does the job. Grade, water, and Piedmont clay

Much of High Point sits on rolling ground that drains toward Oak Hollow and the creeks feeding it, which means a lot of yards here have real slope. Slope is not a problem, but it has to be planned. Racking the panels to follow grade keeps the bottom tight to the ground so nothing digs underneath. Where the drop is sharp we step the fence and address the gaps deliberately. Underneath all of it is red clay that holds water rather than shedding it. A post sitting in saturated clay through a hard freeze gets pushed upward, and repeated cycles are what eventually tilt a fence line. Concrete footings set to depth are the fix, and they matter more here than the brand on the pickets. Add the summer thunderstorms, the occasional tropical remnant coming up from the coast, and the ice storms that load a top rail in midwinter, and the post work becomes the whole ballgame.

Materials that fit the housing stock

Vinyl is the most requested privacy fence in the newer sections of the city. Wood still fits the older neighborhoods better, particularly board-on-board and shadow-box builds that read the same from both sides and match the age of the house.
