Linwood is a crossroads community south of Lexington, close enough to the Yadkin River and the Rowan County line that the land starts to flatten out and open up. The rail yard is the landmark most people know it by. Everything around it is farm ground, woodlots, and houses sitting on a few acres apiece, which makes for a different kind of fence work than the towns to the north.

The most common job here is a yard carved out of a larger property. Somebody has three or five acres, uses maybe a third of an acre of it daily, and wants a dog contained, a garden protected, or a boundary that a neighbor’s four-wheeler will respect. Fencing the whole parcel would cost several times as much and be no more useful. The rest of the work is agricultural, pasture fence and cross-fencing, and boundary runs along road frontage where the point is marking what is yours.

Ground that holds water

Davidson County red clay is not friendly to shallow posts. It absorbs water instead of letting it through, expands when saturated, and contracts when it dries, and any post that is only tamped into soil gets levered a little further out of plumb every cycle. Down toward the river bottoms the ground stays wetter longer, which makes it worse. Every post we set goes into concrete, deep enough to sit under that movement, with corner and gate posts sized heavier than the line posts because those carry the whole run. Summer storms and the ice that comes most winters both find whatever was set carelessly.

Board, wire, and chain link

Farm fence in board, woven wire, or a combination, spec’d to whatever is going to be inside it. Chain link for dog yards and containment, galvanized or black vinyl-coated. Wood for privacy near the house and for road frontage, with a HeartWood finish available if you want the color without the stain schedule. Wide swing gates for equipment and trailers, hung on posts sized for the load.
