Elon is a small town organized around a university, and both halves of that description show up in the work. The campus sits at the center with brick and mature trees, the residential streets nearby run to a mix of long-held family homes and rental property, and the town shifts noticeably in pace between the academic year and the summer. Owner-occupied and tenant-occupied are different jobs

For a home somebody lives in, the usual priorities apply. Privacy where the neighbor is close, containment for a dog, and something that suits a street where the houses have some age to them. Wood does that well, particularly board-on-board, which looks the same from both sides and does not force anyone to argue about which way the finished face points. For a rental, the calculus changes. The owner is not there to reseal a fence every couple of years, and tenants are hard on gates. That pushes the recommendation toward vinyl for its lack of upkeep, and toward heavier gate posts and better latch hardware than a comparable job would otherwise get. A fence on a rental fails at the gate almost every time.

Trees, tight lots, and the calendar

The older streets near campus have a genuine tree canopy, and that canopy is one of the reasons the town looks the way it does. Root systems run well past the trunk, which means post locations sometimes have to flex. We hand-dig around anything structural and shoot the line so the run still reads straight even where the spacing varies by a few inches.

The lots themselves are modest, and a six-foot solid fence on all sides of a small yard can make it feel like a box. Mixing materials solves that. Solid where privacy actually matters, ornamental aluminum with a SolarShield finish everywhere else, so the yard keeps some air. Under all of it is Piedmont clay that holds water instead of draining it. A post set shallow in saturated clay gets lifted every time that water freezes, and a few winters of that is what tilts an old fence line. Every post goes into concrete at proper depth. Humid summers, thunderstorms shoving against solid panels, and the ice storms that load a top rail in January are all carried by the footings.
