Sophia Fence Installation

Sophia is a post office, a school, a few crossroads and a great deal of good land. It sits in western Randolph County along NC 62, close enough to Asheboro, Trinity and High Point that people commute to all three, but rural enough that most parcels here are measured in acres and most driveways are long. There is no downtown to speak of and there does not need to be.

Nearly all the fence work we do around Sophia is acreage work. Pasture for horses or cattle, boundary lines that have never been marked, a woven wire run to keep dogs on the property, a driveway gate at the road. Alongside that, most people want the immediate yard enclosed properly, and that is where privacy panels or a picket line come in. The two jobs get quoted together and built to different specs.

Clay, water and post depth

The soil here is heavy red clay that holds water rather than shedding it. After a run of spring storms or the remnants of a tropical system stalling over the county, this ground stays saturated for days. A post tamped into that clay will lean, and the first hard freeze will lift it further. Every post we set goes into a concrete footing below the disturbed layer, on pasture line and back yard alike. On long rural runs we also plan for what winter does: an ice storm loads every rail on the fence and brings limbs out of the tree line, and only a properly footed line comes through that intact.

For material, split rail and post-and-rail mark boundaries handsomely on land like this, woven wire does the containment work, and mesh-backed rail is what we build where horses are kept, in three-rail or four-rail depending on the animals. Around the house, treated pine with StayStrong pickets is the workhorse, and vinyl with PrivacyLock interlocking panels is there if you would rather not maintain anything. The SolarShield coating keeps white vinyl from chalking through a Carolina summer.
