Yadkinville is the courthouse town for Yadkin County, a compact square of a place at the crossing of US 601 and NC 67, surrounded on all sides by the vineyards and farm ground that give the Yadkin Valley its name. The wine country here has grown into a genuine draw over the past two decades, and it sits alongside the older economy of tobacco, hay, cattle and small family farms that never went anywhere.

Ground conditions in the valley

The soil here is the same slow-draining Piedmont clay found across the Triad, and it behaves the same way toward fence posts. Long-cultivated ground is worked deeper than it looks, so on old farm land we plan to dig further than the surface suggests. Winter ice storms are the other real load out here, coating every rail and bringing limbs down out of the tree line across an exposed fence.

For material, split rail and post-and-rail mark a boundary handsomely without closing off the view, which matters where the view is part of the property’s value.
