When a hard freeze comes through, that water expands and lifts. Over a few winters it turns a straight run into a wandering one. We set every post in concrete below the frost line and go deeper where the ground is soft, and corner and gate posts get set heavier than the rest. The weather here does the rest of the testing. Humid summers, thunderstorms that shove against anything solid, tropical remnants that occasionally reach this far inland, and the January ice that loads a top rail with weight nobody designed for. A fence survives all of that on its footings.
