Pinnacle sits on the Stokes County side of Pilot Mountain, on rolling farm ground below the knob, and most of what gets fenced here is pasture, boundary and driveway rather than back yard. The mountain in the background is not just scenery for this work. It is a design constraint, because a lot of people here bought the property partly for the view and would rather not fence it away.

That is a solvable problem. Post-and-rail, split rail and board fence all define a boundary and contain livestock while leaving the sightline intact. Solid panels have their place, close to the house where screening is actually the point. Deciding which is which happens on the property with you standing there, not off a satellite photo.

For animals, the answer depends on what you are keeping. Woven field wire on braced corner assemblies is the practical build for cattle. Mesh-backed rail is what we put up wherever horses are kept, because the rail gives an animal a line it respects and the mesh behind it means no leg goes through and nothing on it will cut a horse that leans. Gates get sized for the largest implement that will ever pass through, with room to turn rather than just to fit.

The ground rolls harder than it looks from the road and it carries rock as it rises toward the mountain. Both cost material and time, and both are the reason a long run gets walked with a wheel before anyone quotes it. Underneath is red clay that holds water, so every winter freeze after a wet stretch will lift a post that is not properly footed. Concrete below the frost line, in undisturbed soil, on every post.
