Haw River Fence Installation

Haw River is a small town that took its name and its history from the water running through it. The mill defined the place for generations, and the housing that came with it, compact lots on a tight street grid, still makes up much of the town. The river itself is the other constant, and on the parcels closest to it the ground and the water have more say in where a fence goes than any design preference does.

The river changes the calculation

Land sloping toward the Haw brings two things a flatter lot does not. The first is grade, which has to be handled deliberately rather than hoped through. Racked panels follow a steady slope and keep the bottom tight to the ground. Stepped panels stay level and drop in increments, which suits an abrupt fall better. The second is moisture. Ground nearer the water holds it longer, the air stays damper, and anything wood ages faster there than it would a mile up the hill. That is not a reason to avoid wood, but it is a reason to seal it on a schedule or to choose vinyl instead. On parcels in or near the floodplain there is a third consideration, which is where water actually goes during a heavy rain. A fence built across the path of moving water collects debris and takes the load, so we look at the drainage as part of the estimate rather than treating it as somebody else’s problem.

Small lots and older fences

Away from the river the work looks like a lot of older mill towns. Narrow lots, houses set close together, and existing chain link from decades back that has stretched, sagged, or lost its posts to the clay. Replacing it is generally more sensible than patching, and it is a good chance to reset the line where the yard is actually used rather than following whatever a previous owner ran.

The clay under all of it holds water instead of shedding it, and a post standing in saturated clay through a January freeze gets pushed upward as that water expands. Do that for several winters and the line goes crooked. Every post we set goes into concrete below the frost line, deeper in the soft stretches. Between humid summers, thunderstorms driving against solid panels, the tropical remnants that occasionally reach this far inland, and the ice storms that load a top rail in midwinter, the footings are doing most of the work.
