Lexington is the Davidson County seat, a furniture and barbecue town with a real uptown and a housing stock that goes back a long way. That history is the fencing story here. A large share of what we replace are fences that a previous owner put in decades ago, set in dirt, on a lot that has shifted since. Red clay is the whole engineering problem

Davidson County soil is heavy Piedmont clay. It holds water instead of draining it, swells when it is wet, and pulls back when it dries, which means anything set shallow gets levered a little further out of line every year. That is why so many older fences in town lean the same direction. We set every post in concrete, below the depth where the ground does its moving, and we look at where water actually leaves the yard before we commit to a line. Humid summers, the storms that break them, and the ice loads that arrive most winters all test the same footing.
