Julian Fence Installation

Julian is a rural community in the southeast corner of Guilford County, close enough to the Randolph and Alamance lines that people here think in terms of roads rather than city limits. There is farmland, there are properties that have been held by the same family for generations, and there are houses on a few acres where the owners wanted room. Very little of the fence work out here is decorative.

Fence that has to hold something

The practical questions come first. What are you keeping in, or out. Where does the boundary actually run. How does equipment get through, and how wide does that opening need to be. Where does water sit after a heavy rain. Answering those on site is most of the job. Farm fencing is the usual solution for pasture and boundary work because it covers distance at a sensible cost and does not close off the land visually. Wood handles the enclosed yard around the house. Chain link gives dogs a secure area without much fuss and does not obscure the view of the property.

What stays constant regardless of material is the post work. On a long rural run, a corner or brace post that was set light will pull, and once it pulls the whole line goes slack. Corners, braces, and gate posts get set heavier and deeper than line posts, and we shoot the line rather than pacing it so the run reads straight across open ground where every deviation is visible.

Red clay and standing water

Southeast Guilford clay is heavy and holds water rather than passing it through. On open land that means the low draws stay saturated for long stretches after a storm, and a post standing in saturated clay through a January freeze gets pushed upward as the water expands. Repeat that a few winters and the line starts to wander. Concrete footings set below the frost line, deeper where the ground is soft, are the answer. The rest of the year does its own testing. Humid summers work on anything wood, thunderstorms push against solid panels, the remnants of tropical systems reach this far inland every few years, and midwinter ice puts weight on a top rail that nothing in the design accounted for.
